Hormone Therapy

Novo Nordisk manufactures and sells two market leading hormone therapy products; Activella and Vagifem. Both products have been available in the US since mid-2000, however Novo Nordisk have only recently assumed full responsibility following the cessation of a licensing agreement with Pfizer.

Activella®, packaged in a 28-day calendar dial, is a low dose continuous-combined once daily tablet combining estrogen and progestin for the treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause, treatment of vulvar and vaginal atrophy and prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis in women with an intact uterus. Novo Nordisk has established a toll-free number for women and their healthcare providers to call for further information regarding the availability of Activella:

Important Information: Do not take ACTIVELLA if you are pregnant, have recently given birth, have unusual vaginal bleeding, or have had a hysterectomy, certain types of cancer, blood clots, or a history of stroke or liver disease. Additionally, estrogen can increase the risk of cancer of the uterus. Combining progestin with estrogen, as with ACTIVELLA, significantly reduces but does not eliminate this risk. ACTIVELLA is generally well tolerated. The most common side effect is breast tenderness. Others may include headache, irregular bleeding, back pain and nausea. For more information ask your healthcare provider or call us.

Vagifem® is approved in the U.S. for the treatment of atrophic vaginitis resulting from estrogen deficiency. Vagifem is a tablet containing natural estrogen, which is administered intravaginally by a disposable applicator. Novo Nordisk has established a toll-free number for women and their healthcare providers to call for further information regarding the availability of Vagifem:

1-888-VAGIFEM (1-888-824-4336)

Important Information: Estrogens have been reported to increase the risk of endometrial carcinoma (cancer of the uterus). Vaginal estrogen therapy should not be used by women who are pregnant or who think they may be pregnant. It should not be used by women who have unusual vaginal bleeding, a history of breast or uterine cancer, or a history of blood clots. While generally mild, side effects experienced by some women using VAGIFEM, were headache, abdominal pain, back pain, upper respiratory infection, vaginal itching and vaginal yeast infection. For more information ask your healthcare provider or call us.
