Our Logo: The Apis Bull

The Novo Nordisk logo is the Apis bull, modeled after an ancient Egyptian bronze statuette. The bull was considered the embodiment of Ptah, the god of science and art. What's more, the choice of the logo follows the old pharmacists' tradition of identifying their pharmacy by an animal symbol.

Novo adopted the logo in 1925, when the company first began manufacturing insulin, soon after the discovery that injections of the hormone could save the lives of people with diabetes. Novo and Nordisk, which merged their resources in 1989, have been responsible for many of the improvements in insulin formulations: the first to produce a highly purified product, the development of NPH and Lente® insulin, and the first commercially available human insulin.
